Construction and the Built Environment

Progress South Central aims to play an instrumental role in the Construction and the Built Environment sector within its region.

In late 2009 Progress South Central contracted Oxford Brookes University to be the lead institution for this sector. With funding from Progress South Central, Dr Karen Gaston was appointed Construction and the Built Environment Project Manager in November. Karen will work closely with Brian Wood, Senior Lecturer in the School of the Built Environment at Oxford Brookes University.

Flagship Projects

Progress South Central is in the process of developing a number of new initiatives across the region for the construction strand.

  • A collaborative project between Oxford Brookes University and University of Reading centred around CPD units at Masters level on topics relating to sustainable construction
  • Support for new Foundation Degrees in construction-related disciplines
  • A survey of current level 3 students which considers where they have come from, and where the wish to progress to, along with the information currently available to assist them in achieving their goals
  • A project to support candidates on the Technical Report Route to full membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers. This route is intended for those who have been working in the Civil Engineering field for a number of years, but who do not have the necessary academic base to qualify for full membership - the report for this project is available on our publications page
  • Work to support progression routes into Higher Education for the new Construction and the Built Environment 14-19 Diploma.
  • Development of progression into Higher Education for students undertaking Apprenticeships in the Progress South Central region.
  • Support for a Surrey Satro EPB project which involved a mobile classroom to encourage progression into Higher Education for construction learners. This will be complemented by a 'Building Bridges' conference run for practitioners on Tuesday 9 March 2010 -see link on right hand side for further information
