CPD sessions to assist preparation for IQER

LEAD ORGANISATION

Ruskin College

PROJECT SUMMARY

Ruskin College received funding from Progress South Central to set up CPD staff development sessions to support high quality provision of vocational higher education and to help staff prepare for IQER (Integrated quality and enhancement review) developmental engagement. CPD needs arising from the IQER process had been identified by Ruskin College senior management, drawing upon the College's self-evaluation documents for the 2009 and 2010 Developmental Engagements.

Four sessions were run in total. The first session was on the topic of Personal Development Plans (PDPs) and a representative from QAA led this session. The three other sessions all related to team building and how to brief staff in preparation for the review.

IMPACT

The PDP session was attended by around 12 people. Every subject area was represented and the staff who attended fed back the learning to their teams, thus enabling the learning to be cascaded through the College. The remaining three sessions were attended by around eight staff each. Ruskin College has 28 academic staff overall.

Ruskin College have reported that this work was extremely valuable to the College. The sessions generally contributed to better staff preparation for Developmental Engagement, for example the session on team working. The session on differentiation resulted in two commendations in the second Developmental Engagement. Based on the success of the sessions, Ruskin College intends to run further sessions including a cross-College preparation for the Summative Review.
