CASE STUDY: David Keen

After completing his NVQ Level 3 in Carpentry and Joinery, David entered higher education as a mature student at the age of 21 in 2006, studying for the Higher National Diploma in Construction Management at Thames Valley University. David eventually graduated from TVU at the age of 25 with a 1st Class BSc (Hons) Degree in Quantity Surveying. David is now studying for an MSc in Construction Law and Dispute Resolution at King's College, London.

David found that the most difficult aspect of the transition from studying at NVQ to studying at HE level was getting to grips with academic study skills, such as learning how to structure an essay. He also had to learn to think critically and to go beyond regurgitation of information, which he initially found difficult. David found TVU's Learning Skills Development Scheme invaluable in helping him to develop the necessary skills. David also says that his tutors were very good at making time for him when he had questions and helping him understand important aspects and principles of construction, regularly sitting down with him sometimes for an hour at a time to discuss issues.

In addition to studying for his MSc, David is now working as a Trainee Contracts Manager at Overbury plc. To other NVQ students thinking of going on to Higher Education, David says:

"I would highly recommend it but ... the applicants would have to really want to do it, it is a massive commitment and very challenging. However, I have found that the rewards have been excellent and I would not be able to achieve what I have done without the opportunity to study in Higher Education at TVU. As a result of Higher Education, I am now in a successful position in one of the UK's largest contracting firms."
