CASE STUDY: Chris Humphrey

Progress South Central was pleased to be able to co-fund a new creative Apprenticeship in 2010-11 at The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire. The apprenticeship, initiated by Creative & Cultural Skills' Museums, Libraries and Archive Council, was designed to open up entry routes into museums. The Roald Dahl Museum offered a unique opportunity for a 'phizz-whizzing person' to work at their 'fantabulous' award-winning family museum gaining experience on the front line with visitors as well as behind the scenes in such areas as the financial, operational and health and safety aspects of running a museum.

The successful applicant among many hopefuls was Christopher Humphrey who had just completed his A-level year at Chesham Park Community College. At interview Chris displayed the energy, enthusiasm and attitude the museum was looking for and he took up his one-year post in October 2010.

There are aspects of this apprenticeship which are unique, for instance, story-telling at the Museum and off-site at schools, both of which Chris has now undertaken unaccompanied. He has worked with young people from reception year to year 5 and adapts his delivery accordingly. There is an element of performance involved, which Chris has enjoyed, overcoming any initial nervousness. He has received praise from teachers and applause and thanks from the children. He has also been entrusted with 'Hut Talks' to smaller parties at weekends. Chris has also taken an active part in staff meetings and has contributed to staff training, developing a quiz about the kinds of questions visitors ask. He has also undertaken a First Aid course and is now qualified.

Chris

He is completing an NVQ Certificate in Creative & Cultural Practice. This Level 2 qualification is delivered in the workplace by Amersham & Wycombe College involving regular monthly meetings with his tutor.

Chris settled in very quickly and has become a valued member of the small team. It is clear that the Museum management is delighted with Chris. They have recognised his maturity and his ability to take on responsibility and there is now an expectation that Chris will be able to continue employment at the Museum beyond October, with a named role within the organisation.

As for Chris, he is thoroughly enjoying his role and 'can't believe' he is working at the Museum.
